JOHANNESBURG, 27 October 2015 – Driven by substantial year-on-year growth in the multiplatform entertainment content business across Africa, organisers Basic Lead report a significant 72% increase in pre-registration numbers for the DISCOP AFRICA television content market and coproduction forum, as Johannesburg plays host to the 11th edition from 4 to 6 November.

1,500+ international delegates and 200+ exhibiting companies from 82 countries were already confirmed at the time of release, underlining DISCOP Africa’s position as the continent’s most important television programming industry gathering.

Participants and exhibitors will represent key broadcasters, pay TV providers, nascent VOD platforms, mobile networks, telecommunications companies, independent and established producers, programs, channels, format distributors, advertisers, influencers and investors, all successfully driving more than US$1 Billion’s worth of multiplatform television content business across Africa, twice as much as two years ago.

Companies in attendance will include A&E Networks, AMC Networks, BBC Worldwide, Canal+, CCTV China, CBS Studios International, Fox International Channels, Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation, M-Net, Modern Times Group, NBC Universal International Networks, NHK Enterprises, SABC, Sky News, Sony Pictures Television, Televisa Internacional, Telemundo Internacional, Turner Broadcasting System and Viacom International Media Networks.

Johannesburg will also welcome the continent’s largest contingent of television content creators invited to DISCOP AFRICA to market their ideas, connect with potential partners, broaden their knowledge, get their projects financed and rub shoulders with production, commissioning, distribution and advertising executives playing a key role in Africa’s booming television ecosystem.

Following its successful launch last year, the 300m2 SOUTH AFRICA PAVILION will take centre stage to provide a major boost for the local film and television industries. Presented by the National Film and Video Foundation, the Gauteng Film Commission, the Kwazulu Natal Film Commission, the Film & Publication Board and the Durban Film Office, the SOUTH AFRICA PAVILION will serve as a hospitality and networking hub for the 500+ South African independent producers expected to attend.

Other national pavilions will include umbrellas from Cote D’Ivoire, Kenya, France, the European Union, the Caribbean, China, Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, the United Kingdom and Botswana.

China, which will be represented by a 100+ person strong delegation, will be “Guest Country” during DISCOP AFRICA’s 11th edition, underlining the country’s desire to establish tangible partnerships in Africa to accelerate the development of innovative and world-class television projects.

Supported by the Department of Arts and Culture and the City of Johannesburg, the 11th edition of DISCOP AFRICA will also feature project pitching competitions dedicated to popular TV genres; a training program navigating the contours of content development, production and distribution; and a high-level conference program featuring international expert speakers. The programme line-up includes Christine SERVICE, SVP and Country Manager, The Walt Disney Company Africa; Alex OKOSI, SVP and Managing Director, Viacom International Media Networks Africa; Dmitry SHISHKIN, Digital Development Director, BBC; and John CHIAHEMEN, CEO, GOTEL Communications.

For the first time, the MEET YOUR STARS program, held as a sidebar event to DISCOP AFRICA, will run parallel to the three-day market and coproduction forum, showcasing new series and marquee shows, enabling media buyers, advertisers, brand managers and influential leaders in the industry to be the first to hear about upcoming television seasons.
